Using Globus

Designed specifically for researchers, Globus provides fast, reliable, and secure file transfer among ACCESS resources or between an ACCESS resource and another system (such as a campus cluster, lab server, or personal computer). Beyond file transfer, Globus allows researchers to securely share data with collaborators, keep copies synchronized on multiple systems, and publish data for broader access as required by many data management plans.

How Globus helps with ACCESS

Use Globus to:

With Globus:

  • You don't have to move your data to a public cloud service to share it.

  • You have full control over what data is shared and with whom.

  • You can share data with colleagues who aren't registered with ACCESS.

Globus is used by researchers all over the world! Many university campuses provide Globus as part of their research computing systems, and many research facilities (sequencing cores, microscopy labs, telescopes, sensor nets) use Globus to deliver data to researchers. If you use Globus with ACCESS, you’ll be prepared to collaborate and share data with researchers at leading institutions around the world.

Globus usage as of October 2022

Premium Globus features (such as data sharing and managed task orchestration) will be available to all ACCESS-allocated resources and researchers for the first year of the project under an ACCESS-wide subscription. And thanks to the strong support of ACCESS resource providers, most of whom have established Globus subscriptions at their institutions, these premium features will continue to be available on most ACCESS resources indefinitely.

Get set up to use Globus with ACCESS

To use Globus with ACCESS, you need to add your ACCESS-CI ID to Globus and grant Globus permission to access your data on ACCESS resources. This section explains how to do this.

Visit the Globus website (https://www.globus.org/) and click the Log In button in the upper-right corner of the page. Figure 1 shows where to click.

Login with ACCESS-CI

You don’t have to create a new account to use Globus. Globus uses accounts you already have. Globus will ask you to choose an organization. Figure 2 shows what this looks like. (If you've already logged in to Globus and are taken directly Globus’s File Manager interface, skip ahead to Add your ACCESS-CI ID, below.)

Type “ACCESS” to find ACCESS-CI (formerly XSEDE) in the organization list, and click Continue.

Now, you’ll see the ACCESS login page, where you can login using your ACCESS-CI username and password. (If you had an XSEDE ID, this is the same username and password.) Figure 3 shows what this looks like.

After entering your username and password, ACCESS will prompt you for two-factor authentication with Duo. When you complete two-factor authentication with Duo, your login will complete and you’ll be returned to Globus. You can now skip ahead to learn more about Globus and ACCESS.

Add your ACCESS-CI ID

If you’ve already used Globus (with your campus or another research organization), add your ACCESS-CI ID to your account so you can use Globus with your ACCESS resources.

At the Globus File Manager page, click the Account icon on the icon bar on the far left of the page. Figure 4 shows where to click.

On the next page, Globus will list any identities you’ve used with Globus. Click Link Another Identity to add your ACCESS-CI ID. Figure 5 shows what this looks like and where to click.

Globus will ask you to choose an organization. Type “ACCESS” to find ACCESS-CI (formerly XSEDE) and login with your ACCESS-CI ID. (See Figures 2 and 3 in the previous section.) When you complete your ACCESS login, Globus will link your ACCESS-CI identity to your existing account so you can use Globus with your ACCESS resources.

More about Globus and ACCESS

Globus is quite powerful, but its interfaces are designed to be easy to learn and easy to use. The following guides will get you started using Globus with your ACCESS resources.
